Liam Gill is a born-and-raised Torontonian who is a former startup founder, lawyer, and advisor. Today, he lives in Spadina-Fort York and supports innovative Canadian technology startups in raising the capital required to grow and scale in Canada. In his spare time, he invests his own time and money to help redevelop single-family homes into 5-10-unit multi-residential buildings.
In 2022, Ontario’s Housing Affordability Task Force estimated that Toronto would need 1.5 million new housing units over ten years. At the time the report was released, Ontario had 2.94 million single-detached houses, accounting for 53.6% of all housing units in the province. If just 10% of those single-family homes were converted to 5+ unit multi-residential buildings, housing affordability would be restored in Ontario.
Liam strongly believes that our housing crisis will not be solved by skyscrapers, but by citizens and small developers converting single-family homes into multi-residential buildings. This type of walk-up multi-family housing lines the streets of Paris, London and Barcelona; there is no reason why Toronto can’t do the same.
Dedicated to his belief, Liam has focused his spare time on becoming a leading expert in the development of missing middle housing in Toronto. This guide is a product of his knowledge and experience and aims to help any citizen investor or landowner understand how they can contribute to solving our housing crisis by developing 5-10-unit multi-residential buildings.
